Issues: Are we still in DELTA?
Tuesday, June 06, 2006

DELTA - Doctor; Engineer; Lawyer; Teacher ; Accountant.

The five profession that will top any Indian's choice of career.
The five profession that become
synonymous with Indian community.
The five profession which are the most sensitive educational issues for Indian.

After decades spending our effort, money and time pursuing these five profession..one question has emerged - Are we still in the DELTA?

The answer is simply YES.

We still assess our student's local uni intake based on how many medical seats taken by Indian students.
We are still keeping our fingers crossed the number of Indians in medical courses will increase this year.

We still cry in vain seeing CSMU, Ukraine being unrecognaized.
We are still mortaging our homes to send our children overseas to be one of these professionals.
Our parents will wishing their sons to be in one of the five profession or else hoping their girls with get married to one!

Does this mean we are failed to recognize the importance of other emerging fields?
Are we puting ourselves vulnerable? Why are letting the world to know - this is what we want and this is what our weakness lies? I wonder why.

If you are in DELTA, tell us why.. I'm curious..
And if you are not, tell us why.. I'm curious as well..

Nice post!!!
well im in the DELTA list-as an E..anyway i never ever planned wat i wanted to be in the first place..i was in Biology stream during secondary school..in form 6 i was offered physics stream..and in university i was offered an engineering courses..i wasnt particularly happy when i got it nor was i sad for getting it..I can just go on with any profession..No profession is lowly..its how much we put our effort in it and try to be the outstanding person in that field..As for the medical courses, i wud say that most INDIANS are still crazy about it..as if they cant succeed in other courses..

~as far as i noe, not many indians are opting for engineering courses as the numbers has been declining eahc years..

no..i'm not part of the DELTA..never wanted to be in it anyway...im a biotechnologist...so unlike peace who is an "E" so I guezz I should be a "B"..

i guezz the reason as to why the DELTA syndrome is still rampant is because a majority of indian parents are still those who are not highly educated and so they view this professions as stable (no offence if i was wrong)..and those children who have parents as doctors and lawyers choose to emulate their parents i guess..

as to why every other indian student's dream is to be a doctor..I guess that is still the biggest mystery of the century..

and I still dont understand why ppl think I'm weird since I alwiz wanted to do biotechnology when I was a biology student during F6..In our class of 20, at least 15 ppl wanted to do medicine..and i cant think of anyone who's actually doing it now..

The funny part is that, a lot of people enter F6 to do medicine..most of em do not even achieve close to the necessary 4.00....then how??

I fall in the E category (Engineer). Truthfully, I wanted to be a doctor (D) as well. It all started when I watched the movie Patch Adams. I suddenly had the passion to be a doctor. I wanted to be a people’s person doctor. I like one part of the movie when Robin Williams asked the patient’s name, where all the other doctors didn’t bother about it. I wanted to make a change in this profession where most doctors nowdays are not friendly.

When i was doing my form6, I realize that it’s impossible for me to score a CGPA 4.00 as I am just an average student. So I opted to take Physics which was my better science subject. Then I applied for all UPM engineering courses as the university has good facilities and it’s just a mere 30minutes drive from my place. I am very happy doing my course here in UPM because I think that I am good at it, but there are still times where I feel a little disappointed.

Hello there

I've read through your post and i find rather disturbing (or alarming) to note this syndrome. A career path taken should be strictly based upon ones personal conviction, and it shouldn't be manifested through parental obligation. DELTA syndrome is undoubtly common among the Indian society, but only in Malaysia.

The key reason for this pertaining matter would be the lack of proper light(or guidance, in a more subtle manner). Now, parents, who are supposed to teach their kids on how to "lead" a good and comfortable life are seriously going off-the-tangent. As a result, "Pride" has seen a meteoric rise-which eventually lead to this DELTA case.

However, this has,of course caused (or would cause) an influx in the Medical profession. It's a situation, in simplified term, we call it- Quantity versus Quality. Many parents have choose to send the kids to unrecognized unis.

In other words, we are just manufacturing them, not producing substancially strong society, in all issues. Be happy if you could bring a change, even if it's a minor one-in any profession who choose to endure

cheers

hey navfalco,

"In other words, we are just manufacturing them, not producing substancially strong society"

i love this man..u noe wat??i used to joke with my frenz who went to russia or ukaraine to do medicine that i WILL never step into their clinic..It was supposed to be meant as a joke but as the time goes by i began to fear that it might really happen...Imagine a person who was in ARTs stream with no biology background studying to be a doctor in ukraine..thats the reality happening currently.
recently Health Minister said that we have too many doctors mushrooming in urban areas..So its no longer guaranteed that u gonna earn big bulks once u have ur white coat and stetoscope)(correct me if the spelling is wrong) on..Its about "doktor laku" or "doktor tak laku"..This does not occurs to doctors only..also to engineers, lawyers and teachers..Now another big problem in the country is that teachers does not want to transfer to their postings in far away states..they wanna stay in Klang Valley and N9 with family as their excuse..But to think of it, why do u opt for teaching profession if u don wan to be posted to different states? Ridiculous..We muz be prepare to face the turbulence if we are gonna go for any profession that we chosed!!

--->>>Invitation for praveen..
hey don be upset that ur not part of the DELTA.. I heard DELTA got an initial with B..so feel free to be a part of us..:P

@ peace

I can just go on with any profession..No profession is lowly

thats the key word.. no profession is lowly.. everyone can make the best of what they have. its just a matter of them thinking out of box. how many willing to do that? a question mark..again.

we are trying to crack the mystery but even after so many years, it remains a mystery. i think its code harder to be broken than the dVC :)

@ makkalzupm

areas such as corporate finance and actuarial science are seriously lucrative..

tell an aunty 'i'm doing actuarial science in U**'..she'll ask u back "r u studying about fish (actuarial sc confused with the term 'aqua')'.

who is at fault? the society for being ignorant? or the students who has a narrow thinking?

Quantity versus Quality. Many parents have choose to send the kids to unrecognized unis.

this worries me alot. for some, obtaining medical degree is enough n u can think abt the consequences later. the saying 'cross the bridge when u come to one' is literally being applied here.

we still have those from these unis who r attempting the compulsory examination for them to practice in the country again and again..unsuccessfully.

The Malaysian Licensing Exam has a very low passing index. Besides some really good univeristies in India are not recognised by MMC. All in the game called politics.

It is very depressing though.Efforts in the name of meritocracy is all but nothing, imho
