Issues: Is racism still alive?
Saturday, May 27, 2006

Are we, the so-called minorities are being suppressed by fanatical parties who knows nothing except their people, their skin-color? Is there a class of working force in IPTAs who are color-blind? Are we being marginalized for being colored? How many percentage of those we know have a third class mentality while blabbering non-stop about being a part of Vision 2020? Is racism still alive?

Stop reading if you say no.

I bet you didn't. If you said yes to any of this question, could you tell us why, when and where you saw racism still alive? There are numerous occasion when we feel that we have being side-lined, be it in the university or in outside world. Yet, some of the time we are just being too emotional on issues affecting our community. Thus the issues of racism came in. However, most of the times, we are right. Racism is still alive and its only alienating us here.

As we are more to matters pertaining our students in IPTA, let me concentrate on that aspect. Until the year 2001, we are assured of 10% of places in medical courses. After the introduction of 'meritrocracy', the percentage dropped to almost nil. I'm sure the majority of us will not agree to use of the term 'meritrocracy' here. Much has been debated on this, but it proved to be fruitless. Are we being marginalized here or we simply don't make the grade?

Are we being penalized during exams for being different race? Are we being stripped of our As because another boy/girl is the lecturer's apple of eye? Simply put - are we being taught by fanatical monsters in the kuliah rooms?

At the same time, I'm not closing the doors on those who value performance instead of skin-color. There are so many of them in our varsities. Lecturers, seniors and batchmates who puts effort, friendship and achievement first before anything else. Still, they are out-numbered by those who thinks the country belongs to them, and only them.

Where do we stand?

If there is one thing I cannot tolerate, then it is racism in educational institutions and in temples. Not just racism, but any kind of power-politics and fanaticism. It is a curse upon men.

Wonder how such bastards get to the top of the ladder.

i beg to differ with this view..there is no racism in the IPTAs..Generally this remark about racist behaviours or unfairly treated according to colour occurs because of ones selfish attitude. All races strive to protect their existence and culture by imposing a certain code so that their race gets more opportunities and thus exel in all field. That is wat happening in local IPTA..The only difference is Malaysia is largely consisted of Malays and the rmain ruling party is also a Malay based party. So obviously the policies set upon by them will favour them in the long run. Lets say if Malaysia is being dominated or ruled by Indians or Chinese, the same thing will happen also. The point here is the different treatment being accorded is not because racism but rather "kiasu" or scared to lose out. AS for the IPTA workforce giving a bad service to different colour student, i don think that happens to everybody. The fact remains that all government workers are somehow reluctant in delivering their responsibility. I have seen Malay student being chided by their Malay lecturers or staff..Indian students not given proper service by the India staffs themselevs. So the issue of bad service given does not occurs because of colour but the mentality of the government staffs..Another issue is the matriculation and STPM standard in local IPTAs..At first i used to get angry knowing that matric students are being given same standard as STPM students who strived so hard to score.. Matriculation came to alive as part of government effort in giving the malays a space to be involved in critical courses which were dominated by indians and chinese. Then 10% was given to non bumiputra student.(to shut their mouth up).. BUt later as i lived the life of an undergraduate, i realized that matriculation students tend to lose out more compared to their counterpart of came from STPM. In my course, matric students who got 4FLAT have to struggle with a CGPA of 2.75 in 1st year..2nd year wasnt much better for them as well..Where else the STPM students scored well and maintained it throughout the year..I began to learn that coming into IPTA is not a big thing at all , be it through matric, STPM, diploma or from recommendation..Its the final result that matters most..But as i see it, in UPM indians are getting bad from the level of an average..There are few indian students who scored 1st class..Proper and ample chances are given to us, but often we blew them up in the smoke.

** If only Universities have subjects like"SKP2000:Dating tips", "SKP2001:Who is her bf", "SKP2002:who is his prey" and most importantly "SKP2003:TAMIL CINEMAS", i believe we will score a full pass in it!!!

Thats the pathetic standard of indians who do not treasure the chances but rather put the blame on "racism" without ever looking at our own mistakes..

Matter of Fact:
~T.Anand Krishnan and Robert Kuok would not have made it to be the richest men if racism still exists in Malaysia..

i assume both comments from the same person.

racism not obvious u say? i doubt it. but yes, it happens everywhr everyday. again, its not no one is speaking about. they are. but they are doing it behind the scene; without anyone hearing it. those who spoke freely about racism are deemed to be rebels. true?

@ upm makkalz

boon for bumi students is because it is easier to score in matriculation then in stpm

thats exactly my point. medical seats thingy is just an example. doesn't racism prevail when 2 different type of admission accepted to the IPTAs where matriculation is nowhere near the standard of stpm? and when one can argue about 10% quota for non-bumi to enter matriculation, how about stpm which can be sat by anyone? there is no such quota impossed on it. being an open paper (i mean anyone who got the grade can sit for one) there is no restriction on stpm and its harder. on the other hand 90% of bumis could sit for a closed-examination which definitely increase their % in IPTAs.

@ pradeep

academic & religious establishment and racism is hard to be separated, i'm afraid.

its my personal opinion, but the establishments are encouraging racism instead of teaching/preaching.

certainly a curse.

Yes.. there is racism in IPTA.. but part of this racist scenario is due to the attitude of the Indians themselves. In UM it seems that the academic standard of the indians has become lower than the malays.. this is then will cause the racist administration will start to find reasons to discriminate.
